Creating a buzz at 116 Pall Mall with 20k new honeybee residents
This month, we established a hive of honeybees at 116 Pall Mall, and they’re already teaching us a thing or two about teamwork, organisation and leadership. We all know that a Queen Bee rules the hive, but did you know that every role within the colony is done by female bees? From gathering pollen to cleaning the hive, building structures and creating honey – a bee hive is a brilliant example of girl power and women in leadership.
The hive is being jointly looked after by a team of volunteers from 116 Pall Mall and our sister brand, the IoD, and our new buzzing buddies have been adopted by two nearby schools, teaching their pupils about the environment, conservation and more, while here at 116 Pall Mall we’re focussed on sustainability, wellbeing and collaboration – all whilst our busy bees pollinate millions of local plants and boost the natural ecosystem and bee population in Central London.
Jonathan Geldart, the Director General of the Institute of Directors, said: “Bees are one of the most important animals on the planet, but their numbers are plummeting rapidly. I am delighted that we are able to play a small part in protecting bees and the vital role they play in the natural ecosystem.
“Quite apart from the environmental, educational and wellbeing benefits the bees will bring, I am also excited by the prospect of 116 visitors being able to enjoy honey made by our own little captains of industry.”
The IoD and 116 Pall Mall are working with BEE1 on this project, a company that specialises in corporate social responsibility solutions. They focus on the environment, education, community and wellbeing, through the conservation and installation of bee colonies.
And don’t worry, your next visit to our beautiful building won’t require a bee suit or nerves of steel around our new teammates – they’re more than happy in their hive at the back of the building, and are far too busy communicating, collaborating and collecting pollen to say hello.
